YOUTH VIOLENCE – AN INTERNATIONAL CRISIS
A book on Violence and bullying that no parent, educator and law enforcement agent should be without. Years of research and work on the frontlines combined with common sense approaches make for a truly new and powerful look at the phenomenon of today’s youth violence. In addition to being the founder and director of End Youth Violence and the creator of the www.youthandviolence.com web site, Mr. Miller has worked on the frontline in youth services in Vancouver, Toronto and Inner City Los Angeles. He knows the problems facing youth and can help you to understand these issues as well.
Introduction
Youth violence is an epidemic facing nations around the world. It is not an isolated issue facing just Americans, Canadians, British or solely any other group of people. It is not solely a problem with black people, first nations people, Hispanic people or Caucasians. It is not solely a male problem or a female problem. It is not solely a problem with teenagers, nor is it just a primary age problem. It is a problem that faces all creeds,
colors, races, genders and socio-economical classes etc.
Youth violence and bullying can be detected as early as pre-school ages.
Behaviors should be taught and enforced from birth. Way to often such aggressive or violent
behaviors are classified as “just a stage” and is allowed to perpetuate itself into more advanced stages of bullying and violence. As a learned
behavior, they learn that such is acceptable through watching others and a lack of corrective actions by parents and educators. The other concern is that as a learned
behavior, if a child grows up in an abusive home or a home that facilitates bullying and violence this attitude is further enforced as acceptable. If a child is bullied by siblings or parents, they may act out and bully or get aggressive with school mates or others outside of the home as a reaction to feel a sense of power to compensate for the feelings of inadequacy and lost control at home.
The following book will delve into the causes, issues and some solutions in relation to Youth violence and Bullying. We as a society must come to a better understanding of these issues and thus can have a more informed approach to raising our children with the non-violent attitudes and
behaviors'.
