About End Youth Violence
End Youth Violence was founded in 1998 by James Miller. Being an experienced youth services worker and former chairperson of the 51 Division Community & Police Liaison Committee, Mr. Miller had experience in working with at risk youth in a variety of capacities. Mostly in intervention and prevention programs, community assessments & prevention and recreation. Mr. Miller had worked in areas which included Inner City areas of Los Angeles, California, Vancouver, British Columbia, Surrey, British Columbia and Toronto, Ontario. From the gangs of South Central to the recreation centers in Regent Park, the wilderness of the Howe Sound to the CLS Ranch in the Santa Monica Mountains he knew one thing. Not enough was being done to teach children and youth alternatives to violence as a manner of conflict resolution. Further, there were not enough free resources for youth, parents, teachers and law enforcement. There was also a lack of public prevention information on Youth Violence and Bullying. In addition, there was not enough information sharing in relation to successful prevention and education programs. Mr. Miller also having experience in Media Relations, Business Management, IT & Web Design, Data Research and Crisis Intervention decided it was time to act. He funded and started End Youth Violence. Research of youth violence and bullying information from around the world began. This information was added this to the data and information he had already researched on these topic areas in which he had previously worked. He started to develop a database of resources available. Mr. Miller further went on to contact schools and media in relation to educating the public on Youth Violence & Bullying prevention and intervention. in March of 2000 End Youth Violence launched the web site www.youthandviolence.com. te web site and organization started receiving calls from concerned youth, parents, law enforcement, educators and others concerned about these issues. Almost instantly the request from volunteer mental health workers such as counselors, psychologists, psychiatrists, and others started answered the request for volunteers. No we have a list of volunteers in many cities throughout Canada and the United States whom we can refer youth to as needed. We further created volunteer community crisis teams who can respond to events in Canada and the United States if requested. The web site has grown to see over 30000 unique visitors in the month of October 2002 and over 20000 in the first week of November 2000. In October of 2002 End Youth Violence launched the Toll Free Help line for Children and Youth in relation to Violence and Bullying. This toll free line is also being used for the Teen-Driver.com hotline to report speeding and unsafe driving by teens. Since 1998 End Youth Violence has distributed thousands of printed information packages, facilitated over 150 workshops and seminars in Canadian and American schools and community centers. End Youth Violence has also been involved in victim advocacy including a role on behalf victims of Columbine High School when a game was to be released allowing players to role play the events of the Columbine High School Massacre. End Youth Violence stopped the release and took control of the games web site. Visitors were forwarded to the End Youth Violence website. End youth Violence called up crisis workers to be available to victims and families of the World Trade Centre, prevented a student armed with a loaded handgun from acting on his hit list in Texas, set-up information kiosks in shopping malls, appeared in dozens of media sources from local to national levels of radio, television and newspapers. End Youth Violence helped stranded air passengers as a result of the September 11th terrorist attacks. End Youth Violence has been there to listen and help families of violence and bullying. End Youth Violence has been there to educate school liaison officers and to do so much more. Mr. Miller used his other business ventures to continue funding End Youth Violence. There have been several small fundraising events for End Youth Violence but due to a lack of support by the business community had only raised about $1500 to date which is less than 5% of End Youth Violence's costs. Due to market conditions and time restrictions Mr. Miller was forced to reduce the services of End Youth Violence and to close his business. He now works as a Greyhound Bus Driver in addition to running End Youth Violence with other volunteers. The help line is answered by one at least one youth worker. Funding is still done by Mr. Miller but he is looking to other business and private donors to ensure the current expansion of End Youth Violence and programs. End Youth Violence has not received any government funding to date. If you wish to gather more information on getting involved, visit the "Getting Involved, Private Donations & Corporate Contributions" portions of the web site. End Youth Violence has done so much more but it would be impractical to list everything here. End Youth Violence has launched a project online at www.teen-drivers.com which deals with Youth and Driving. This new project is set-up to be self supporting. If you have ay questions not covered here, please feel free to call our office at (604)592-6830. In closing, we wish to thank everyone for visiting our web site and taking the time to learn about Youth Violence Prevention and our organization. End Youth Violence is truly an International Organization with people turning to us for information from Canada, United States, Japan, China, Philippines, Australia, Demark, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Spain and Portugal in November 2002 alone. We only conduct workshops and seminars in Canada and the United States at this time but we are looking to expand in the future. If you are requesting information from elsewhere, we will forward your request to an organization in your country or notify you if one is not located.
