VANCOUVER/CKNW(AM980)
- Ongoing gun violence across the lower
mainland has prompted new calls for the
aggressive enforcement of existing firearms
laws.
Vancouver Police Inspector Kash Heed, on the
CKNW Morning Show with Philip Till today, says
many of those crimes are committed by young
people who don't understand the consequences
of their actions. “Sometimes, those
consequences aren't adequate at this
particular time,” Heed said. “These people
need to be dealt with and they need to be
dealt with swiftly, but we also have to look
at long-term solutions to those problems, so
young people don't continue on in this cycle
of violence.”
Heed is the commanding officer of district
three; an area known for recording most of the
city's gun violence.
Continuing the look at gun violence, a
Vancouver activist to end youth violence is
pointing to several factors he believes are
directly related to the increase in gunplay on
urban streets in Canada.
James Miller of ‘End Youth Violence’,
also on the CKNW Morning Show with Philip
Till, said lax border control is a major
contributor. “We have to take a look at
increasing the searches and the surveillance
along the border when vehicles are coming
across,” said Miller. “There's a lot of
weapons being smuggled in."
Miller also blames lack of supervision by
parents and weak sentencing in the courts.
